In more ways than one, the victory of Alvaro Uribe in Colombia's presidential election on May 28th was exceptional. In opting to give Mr Uribe, a tough conservative, a second term, Colombian voters bucked a regional trend which has seen voters choose leftists of differing stripe in recent elections in Latin America. They also did so by an exceptional margin, giving him 62% of the vote, or almost three times as much as his nearest challenger (see page 58). That is vindication for Mr Uribe and his controversial policy of "democratic security".
