摘要

There has never been a presidential election in Mexico quite like it. Late on the evening of July 2nd, as a cold rain fell on the capital, both Felipe Calderon and Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador appeared before their respective supporters to claim victory, while at the same time saying that they would await the final official count. Three nailbiting days later, shortly before dawn on July 6th, this finally gave victory to Mr Calderon of the conservative National Action Party (PAN). According to the Federal Electoral Institute, with 99% of the ballots counted, he won 35.7% compared to 35.5% for his left-of-centre opponent-a gap of more than 100,00 votes.
