摘要

The last thing that a party with its roots in the trade unions needs before an election is a row with unionised government workers. But Labour may be facing exactly that, as the argument about what should happen to Britain's expensive public-sector pension schemes turns nasty. Unlike most of the private sector, the state still offers defined-benefit schemes. The usual retirement age is 60, compared with 65 in the private sector, and it is possible to retire even earlier. The government says that this largesse cannot continue.
