News is rarely good for China's farm-ers. Years of barely rising incomes and huge tax burdens have made them an unhappy lot. Last year saw something of a recovery, to the extent that some parts of the country are reporting a fall in the numbers of rural jobless who normally flock to the cities at this time of year in search of work. But the recent surge of enthusiasm for tilling the fields will be hard to sustain.
