摘要

In Virginia, as'in many other states, highly sophisticated DNA testing is supposed to take the guesswork out of murder and rape investigations. But some of these tests, which are run by the state government, may have been faulty, and perhaps even compromised by politics. Now Virginia's governor, a pro-death-penalty Democrat who may run for president in 2008, wants to get the bottom of it. Mark Warner is backing a review of 161 DNA tests, possibly including the cases of men already executed. Defence lawyers and prosecutors say the inquiry could bring chaos, disrupting investigations, delaying trials and triggering the release of more jailed felons, eight of whom have already been exonerated by DNA tests.
