"It's not solidarity, it's a rip-off," said the Confederation Generate du Travail (CGT), France's biggest (and also communist-backed) trade union. The government's decision to scrap the Pentecost public holiday, on May 16th, was meant as a gesture of solidarity towards the elderly. It ended up in confusion and resentment-another botched reform to increase the country's malaise ahead of its referendum on Europe's constitution on May 29th.
