THE "realist" school of diplomacy has always held that a regime's record on human rights is only one of a number of factors that should condition a democratic government's attitude towards it-and by no means the most important one.Geographical position,access to oil or other resources,the potential for trade,usefulness in the struggle against communism or fundamentalism:all these must be taken into account before giving in to the righteous anger to which the realists' mortal enemies,the "idealists",are so prone.
