摘要

When Robert Lowell died in 1977 at the age of 60, America lost its greatest living poet. Lowell's declamatory and often bruisingly rhetorical verse grew out of a torture d, manic life. It influenced a whole generation of confessional poets, who came to maturity in the 1960s and who included among their number John Berry-man and Anne Sexton. Two years ago, the long-awaited volume of his collected poems was published. Now, with the appearance of his letters, from the same publisher, it is possible for the first time to step behind the often grandiose mask of the poet and compare the work with the circumstantial details of the life.
