Confused about the outlook for American business? Then count yourself in good company. America's bosses are fickle, too, according to the "ceo confidence index" produced quarterly by Goldman Sachs, using feedback from its clients. In May the investment bank found that confidence among American bosses was at its lowest since 2002, hitting 40 on a scale of 0-100, with 0 as total despair. This week (see chart on next page) it was 91-de-noting "roaring" optimism, says Goldman.
