摘要

In a supreme irony, the referendum Venezuela's opposition had been demanding for almost two years looks likely to end up gluing the country's populist president, Hugo Chavez, more firmly than ever to the presidential chair. On August 16th, the pro-government majority on the electoral council (CNE) announced that the president had an unassailable lead of 58% over 42% for the opposition. Despite protests by the CNE'S two minority members, and the claim by the leaders of Democratic Co-or-dinator (CD)-the broad opposition alliance-mat a "gigantic fraud" had been perpetrated, international observers endorsed the result.
