摘要

The multiple recounts; the allegations of chicanery; the belated admission of defeat-they all seemed familiar. Perhaps the rancorous contest between Derek Simpson and Sir Ken Jackson for the joint general-secretaryship of Amicus, Britain's second-biggest union, didn't have quite the drama, or the import, of Bush versus Gore. But Mr Simpson's victory last week, after Sir Ken's eventual concession, was widely greeted as a symptom of a new era of industrial relations in Britain―or rather, of a return to an old era of union militancy. The replacement of Sir Ken, an ally of the prime minister, by a former commu-nist, in a union that had been a bulwark of the Labour right, is bad enough for Tony Blair. But Amicus is only the latest in a series of unions to choose such inconvenient leaders. Two other leviathan unions, and the Trades Union Congress (Tuc)―whose conciliatory current boss, John Monks, has helped Mr Blair to portray the Labour movement as sane and respectable―will also change hands soon.
