You can't put a price on hu-nan life. From this truism springs one of the most harmful delusions of the modern world-that when public money is spent on life-saving medical care, no account should be taken of the cost. Given that demand for health care is almost infinite, while budgets are sadly finite, it makes sense to start by spending money on interventions that save a lot of lives, cheaply. If good public health is the goal, treatments that save fewer lives at greater cost should receive lower priority.
