Video games may be violent and brutal, but they are nothing compared with the business of making them. Look no further than Sega, the Japanese firm that, despite a passionate following, has been on the losing side of the game wars for most of its existence. Its Dreamcast console is the best, most powerful machine you can actually buy today (since Sony's Playstation 2, or ps2, is in such short supply), and Sega has shifted over 6m Dreamcasts since its release in late 1999. Yet on January 24th, Sega sounded its surrender. It plans to stop production of Dream-cast hardware and focus on making software for its own machines and those of rivals, including the ps2, Nintendo machines, Microsoft's forthcoming XBox and the pc.
