摘要

Dale earnhardt was born while stock-car racing was still in its infancy. Back in 1951, the National Association for Stock Car Automobile Racing (or nascar) was only three years old. Its drivers came with real or imagined claims to have run moonshine whiskey down back-roads just in front of the police. The cars came off the showroom floor for the weekend. But when Mr Earnhardt died last weekend, in a crash at the Daytona 500, he left behind one of the most successful sports in the country, and a talisman of the new South.
