There is more to Ford's recall of Fire-stone tyres this week than meets the eye. The latest skirmish in the increasingly bitter war between the two companies is over nothing less than the fate of the car maker's most profitable products. That is why Ford, without any federal prompting, is ready to spend up to $3 billion to recall and replace 13m Firestone Wilderness at tyres, most of them used on its popular Explorer sport-utility vehicles (suvs). That is twice as many as in an earlier recall last summer, triggered by the deaths of at least 170 American motorists.
