For the European firms building "third-generation" (3G) mobile-phone networks, hobbled by huge debts and technical problems, there was at last some good news this week. On June 5th Regtp, Germany's telecoms regulator, clarified the rules governing network-sharing, making it clear that 3G operators would be allowed to share parts of their network infrastructure. Operators hope to save as much as 40% of the cost of building their German networks as a result of the decision.
