摘要

Astockmarket rally would certainly have lifted spirits battered by terrorist attack. A staged rally, on the other hand, would have sent entirely the wrong signal. So when New York's stockmarkets reopened on September 17th—after missing four trading days, the longest break since 1933-what better way for Wall Street to show the world that it is truly back to normal? Share prices fell steeply, in an unsentimental response to an event that was clearly bad news from an economic perspective, as well as from all others.
