It is the sort of plot on which network prime-time TV thrives: backwoodsman from the Rocky Mountains, who founded a business by selling satellite dishes out of a pick-up truck (Charlie Ergen), outsmarts savvy media mogul (Rupert Murdoch) to clinch America's biggest satellite-television operator (Directv). On October 29th General Motors duly announced that it was selling Hughes Electronics, which operates DirecTV, to EchoStar, Mr Ergen's sat-ellite-TV company, which is only a little over half DirecTV's size, for $26 billion.
