On the front page of the European edition of the Guardian, a British newspaper, there is a small table showing the price of the newspaper in over 30 countries, from Albania ($2) to Ukraine ($3.50). You might have thought that the imminent arrival of the single currency would have prompted harmonisation of the price within the euro zone, so it comes as a surprise that readers in Greece and Portugal pay €1.67, in France €2.13 and in Finland and the Netherlands as much as €2.61. Before euro prices, such price differentials were hard to spot. Now they are glaring.
