On December 14th, university researchers were due to find out what their colleagues really thought about them, with the publication of the results of a five-yearly assessment of research. Since money depends on the results, everybody is watching keenly.rnThe results divide research into what is world-class and what is not. They show that British research, ranked among the best in the world, has further improved since it was last examined. More than half of researchers are based in departments containing work of international excellence, compared with a third in 1996.
