For the past 2,000 years, millennial visionaries have periodically forecast the arrival of ten-horned beasts and lakes of fire and brimstone. On the eve of this millennium, the end-of-the-world brigade foresaw doom because some computer software confused 2000 with 1900. Now, this vision has melted in the dawn, leaving many people wondering whether the gurus who prophesied this secular apocalypse were just as unreliable as the mystical millenarians of the past.
