An odd thing happened last month, just before Christmas. A Hong Kong firm, only eight months old, nan by the 33-year-old son of an old-style property tycoon and with a business plan that almost nobody fully understands, suddenly became one of the biggest Internet companies in the world, with a stockmarket value of $21 billion. Odder yet: it might even deserve it.
