摘要

It was an inappropriate place for an inappropriate ceremony. Indonesia's president, Abdurrahman Wahid, was making his first visit as head of state to the troubled western province of Aceh, where thousands of people have died in fighting between separatist guerrillas and the security forces since the 1970s. Mr Wahid had been under pressure to come since being elected last October. The local people have intensified their de-mands for a referendum on independence, similar to the vote held last year in East Timor, which has now broken away to become a separate state.
