The presence of Rwandan and Ugandan troops supporting the rebels in eastern Congo is turning many Congolese back to President Laurent Kabila. Uganda's own security is looked at in the next article. Urging a sceptical American Congress to agree to the deployment of some 5,500 (non-American) un peacekeepers in Congo, Richard Holbrooke, the American envoy to the un, stressed the danger of a "resurgence of genocide and mass killing in Central Africa". In awful support of his warning, news has been trickling through of many thousands of deaths in the Ituri region of north-eastern Congo, as Hema and Lendu tribesmen battle it out for land and power.
