Two things can be said with reasonable onfidence about the confused events in Fiji. A hardline ethnic-Fijian regime is likely to take over. And the country will face enduring economic difficulties. The country's military chief, Commander Frank Bainimarama, declared martial law this week and conceded most of the demands of George Speight, who entered Suva's parliament buildings on May 19th and seized the prime minister, Mahendra Chau-dhry, and other ministers. Mr Chaudhry's elected coalition government is finished. And the country's 1997 constitution, which gave greater rights to Indo-Fijians, is gone. But the country's political crisis keeps unravelling to reveal new points of friction.
