This was the day when the hostages were to be freed. On August 19th, Abdul Rajab Azzarouq, a Libyan who has played a major part in the negotiations, entered the camp of the Abu Sayyaf group on the southern Philippine island of Jolo with high expectations. But he returned without any of the hostages. The kidnappers handed the Libyan a letter saying, in effect, that they feared an attack by the Philippine army once all their captives were freed.
