Four years ago, Sir C.K. Chow was on a business trip in Taiwan, from his base in Hong Kong. At the time, he was running the Asian operations of boc, a multinational British gases firm, and negotiating with a headhunter about becoming a non-executive director of gkn, a British engineering company. In the middle of the night, he was woken by another headhunter calling from London, wanting to know if he would be interested in becoming chief executive of gkn. Recently passed over for the top job at boc, he was happy to talk.
