On September 9th, Lionel Jospin's Socialist government settled with protesting lorry and taxi drivers by offering to reduce taxes on diesel fuel by FFr3 billion (around $400m), spread over two years. The blockades of lorries and taxis dispersed, and normal life quickly resumed.
