For a town in the middle of the Amazon forest with no industry, little agriculture and few tourists, Ta-batinga seems surprisingly prosperous. In the evenings its main street, lined with restaurants and bars, buzzes with designer-clothed youngsters parading up and down on new motorbikes. What fuels the economy is cocaine, flowing down the rivers from neighbouring Colombia and Peru, or flown across the borders in light aircraft.
