Bringing order to chaos—a laudable objective in the ever expanding universe of digital information. The name "Cadmus" has been used to describe those who bring order to chaos, and Cadmus Communications, the Richmond, Virginia-based publishing and packaging services provider with origins dating back to the early 20th century, is working aggressively to live up to its lofty namesake. Anyone who has prepared content for print (and/or Web) publication understands all too well the bedlam that can—and in many cases, does—ensue during the production process. Publishing is labor intensive, time consuming, and occasionally headache inducing. It's also the bread and butter of Cadmus' business model: the company markets itself as "the world's largest provider of content management and production services to scientific, technical, and medical journal publishers and the fourth largest periodicals printer in North America." With annual revenues of roughly $450 million and 1,000 customers producing more than 4,000 periodicals and single titles last year alone, Cadmus certainly is poised to live up to its hype as well.
