Evidence for an Association Between Women and Nature: An Analysis of Media Images and Mental Representations

The existence of an association between women and nature has beenna longstanding claim of scholars from many disciplines. However,npsychological evidence for this association has been lacking. Thisnarticle presents evidence of the woman–nature association in ev-neryday media representations and in laypeople’s conscious beliefs.nStudy 1 demonstrates the association through a content analysis ofnimages sampled from two popular search engines. Study 2 demon-nstrates it by directly asking people about the associations they holdnbetween gender and nature, and clarifies their attitudes toward thesenassociations. Findings from both studies indicate that women arenindeed more associated with nature than men and that this associ-nation results in consciously positive attitudes toward men, women,nand nature.
