Although we have covered EDM dielectrics several times in the last 25 years of reporting, it is not only time for a review, but with more attention to the actual characteristics and effects of each dielectric type. Generally speaking, dielectric oil is used in Sinkers and deionized water is used in Wire EDM. However, there are always exceptions for every rule - especially in EDM - as there are Sinker-conversions that use Dl water and there are oil-dielectric WEDM's that are commercially available. During this study, we will try to offer a better understanding of the why and the when for each. There are also several types of semi-conductive oil additives for specially equipped Sinkers to increase roughing and fine finishing speeds in complex cavities. We will examine all EDM dielectric use - Sinker and Wire, oil and water - but we must first start at the beginning so we all understand; what is a dielectric?
