How do we define part quality in the case of a Wire EDM? Is it surface finish, flatness and parallelism of two opposing cut surfaces, or is the radius form internal and external throughout the length of the cut? Or is it all of the above? On the system, how is it defined? At what point should we consider using a smaller wire diameter? In this article, we are going to attempt to add some clarity to this subject. I have heard people describe part quality in many different ways. "Oh, we do everything with a main and two trims." "Good, better, and best". Maybe, just by surface finish alone. When performing test cuts for potential clients to see how our systems compare with a competing products, it's very difficult to get a true analysis of the process without an accurate means of defining part quality.
