This concludes the description of how tungsten carbide products are produced. Most products will still require further processing before use; round cutting tools must be ground, blocks and strips can be ground and EDM'ed while some preforms such as carbide inserts can go right into use. In the process of explaining this, there were some seemingly unrelated areas of carbide-making within this chapter, but I assure you, everything was necessary except the brief history of tungsten (but now you know). We will examine all aspects of EDM'ing carbide - sinker and wire, -just as thoroughly in the next issue installment "EDM and Carbide - Part 2". Hopefully by its conclusion, you will understand why the surgeon must know everything about his patient before he performs any surgery.
