Man's desire to explore space and safely return led to the development of specialty materials that could withstand high temperatures during reentry. One of these materials in the race to conquer space was specialty graphite developed by a Texas based aerospace company. This material breakthrough was so unique that the technology was acquired by Pure Oil Company in 1964 for further commercialization. The graphite division became known as POCO, an acronym for the new owner. POCO's specialty graphites have subsequently been utilized in a variety of applications and markets. Its materials portfolio has increased to include a family of graphites, silicon carbides, high temperature materials and a wide variety of post processes and machining capabilities.
