PCD is produced using many different grain sizes of the diamond crystals as well as concentration levels of crystals within the diamond layer. The individual crystal sizes can range from less than one micron up to 25 microns, and may include combinations of both. Typically the smaller diamonds are used in applications requiring a finer finish, and the coarser crystals in more abrasive materials. Many of the PCD tool makers have also achieved success using the finer materials in hard-to-machine products like titanium due to the inherently sharper cutting edge that develops (edge sharpness is dictated by the crystal size as a natural hone develops during machining). Concentrations of the diamond crystals within the layer normally range from 90 - 95% with the remaining material consisting of the cobalt. Generally the higher the diamond concentration and the larger the crystal size, the more expertise that is required during the erosion process to prevent leaching of the cobalt.
