Coordinate measuring machines (CMMs) have been improving measurement productivity for over 50 years. As CMMs have made so many inspection tasks seem almost trivial, is it possible that too many people are taking for granted the capability of their CMM? CMMs are often expensive, with sophisticated software and complicated accuracy specifications, and many CMMs are successfully and efficiently used daily, sometimes operator-less, by users with limited knowledge of their CMM. As with so much of our modern technology, as the daily use becomes easier, the level of knowledge needed to properly implement and support the technology can become quite high. This article discusses some of the key issues to help users better understand and better use their CMMs.
