The objective of this research work is to develop an enhanced particle swarm optimization (PSO) and apply the same toward maximum power point tracking (MPPT) in photovoltaic (PV) systems under partial-shaded conditions. Toward this goal, detailed study is carried out in the flocking behavior of birds and it is observed that during the initial stages, birds do fly randomly, but as the flight continues the peripheral elements show the tendency to move to the core of flock. This characteristic feature is integrated with conventional PSO and a new PSO is developed. In the new PSO, birds search the nook and corner of the solution space in the early stages and then the marginal elements of the flock are made to move to the center. This behavioral attribute enhances convergence characteristics of the bird flock. The new concept is lucidly explained and then applied to MPPT in PV systems. Computed and measured MPPT curves are given to demonstrate the validity of the new PSO.
