This article presents a generalized hybrid single-carrier sinusoidal modulation control for cascaded multi-level inverters. This scheme combines the features of fundamental frequency modulation and single-carrier sinusoidal modulation strategies. The main characteristic of this modulation is the reduction of switching losses with better harmonic performance. A sequential switching scheme is embedded in this hybrid modulation to overcome differential heating among the power devices. Single-carrier sinusoidal modulation and its base modulation design are implemented on a TMS320F2407 digital signal processor. A complex programmable logic device realizes a hybrid pulse width modulation algorithm, and it is integrated with a digital signal processor for hybrid single-carrier sinusoidal modulation generation. The feasibility of this hybrid modulation is verified by spectral analysis, power loss analysis, simulation and experimental results.
