Based on the non-negative property of the discriminant of a voltage double-quadratic equation, a new line loadability index, Ls, for radial distribution systems is proposed. The Ls index can be used to assess voltage instability and the line loading margin. This article also mathematically proves the uselessness of an existing line loadability index.
