Optimum Current Waveform for Minimizing Torque Ripple of SPM Motors

This article deals with the shaping of the current waveform for minimizing the torque ripple in a surface mounted PM motor. This technique is not completely new, as it has been presented in specific applications. Conversely, this article proposes a generalized approach to determine the well-suited current waveform that minimizes the torque ripple. The computed current waveforms are considered the ideal waveforms for eliminating the torque ripple. Considerations are then given about practical implementation. The procedure for computing the current waveforms is presented for both sinewave or squarewave current control. Some constraints are imposed to the currents so that they assume actual waveform. Then, various current shapes are determined on the basis of the back emf waveforms, considering both full and partial-conduction period. To verify the analytical results, the computed current waveforms have been implemented in a DSP and imposed to a surface mounted PM motor by a hysteresis current controller. Experimental results of the different current waveforms are presented and discussed, emphasizing their effectiveness in reducing the torque oscillation.
