Research on condition assessment of XLPE cable based on signal propagation characteristics

As the important delivery power equipment, condition assessment of XLPE cable has been always the focus of attention. This paper proposes a new method to realize the condition assessment by utilizing the signal propagation characteristics. In this method, the complex permittivity is solved by the attenuation coefficient and the shifting constant of phase angle. Then the dielectric loss factor (tan 6) is obtained with only the voltage signal. To verify the proposed method, the XLPE cable is modeled and the simulation experiments are conducted. First, the vector fitting is applied to achieve the rational approximation of series impedance and shunt admittance. Meanwhile, the cable is modeled by the T-type circuits cascading considering the distributed parameter effect. Then, simulation experiments of 100 m and 3000 m cables in different insulation conditions are carried out based on the cable model. Finally, the effect of random error and synchronization error on the proposed method is also discussed. The simulation results demonstrate the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed method.
