This paper describes a fuzzy-based analytical method and a fuzzy-based Monte Carlo simulation (MCS) technique to obtain a possibility distribution of reliability indices for substations. In many cases, the notion of representing component reliability data (such as failure rate or repair rate) by crisp numbers must be challenged. Using fuzzy mathematics, reliability data are represented by membership functions, not a single value. These membership functions represent the uncertainties involved in determining the failure rates and repair rates of components. Reliability indices for each load point or a substation are calculated as possibility distributions. An example is given to demonstrate these methods and their comparisons.
