Efficiency is nothing more than the quotient of output and input. The historical record of careful measurements indicates efficiencies should always be less than 100%. In exceptional cases, energy is released from an unexpected source. This is the quest of new energy research. But for the most part, claims of overunity are usually debunked as attributable to one of two common errors. The first error might be referred to as the high-school approach to physics, wherein variables have single-word definitions and fit neatly into algebraic equations with no consideration of boundary conditions. Manufacturers' specifications are taken as universal constants in spite of the fine print. The other error consists in not understanding how circuit components operate in the real world. This can include ignoring forces that build in resistance to change, like Lorentz forces, or not accounting for inductance picked up in lines.
