"Bootlegs" Is A Slang Term For false grounds or false "neutrals." According to National Electrical Code (NEC) Section 250.24 (A)(5),"A grounding connection shall not be made to any grounded circuit conductor on the load side of the service disconnecting means... [with three rare exceptions]." "Bootlegs" are a good example of a dif-ficult-to-correct situation found in old work. They often appear where someone did not make the effort to do things right. Some home inspectors consulted a group of electrical inspectors and other knowledgeable folks. In the inquirers' opinion, a common cause of a false ground is a screw or nail that pierces the insulation of the grounded conductor of NM and simultaneously contacts the grounding conductor. The home inspectors were seeking opinions regarding the seriousness of the violation. A local inspector wanted to require a builder to remove drywall and correct this condition, but first wanted something to back up his position.
