Since researching power modules for a recent article (Reference 1), I've developed a healthy respect for this product niche. Although they're more expensive than roll-your-own power converters, their perfectly matched internal components and layout solve most high-density-power-conversion headaches. Addressing that niche, Linear Technology recently introduced a couple of 1.5W dc/dc modules with 725V-dc galvanic isolation in a 9x11.25x4.92-mm BGA package. The module targets applications such as industrial, avionics, and instrumentation equipment.
