This paper presents a method to validate the loss calculation models for large direct drive wind generators using a reduced size demonstrator. The demonstrator simulates the losses in the rotor of a direct drive wind generator, having a similar width of the air gap, pole and slot pitch and magnets size. An axial flux machine is used, to allow the aforementioned equivalence. This causes construction difficulties and also requires a three dimensional finite element model for an exact calculation. The concept proves itself valid because the calculated losses in the reduced size demonstrator are proportional with the losses calculated for the full size direct drive wind generator, considering the appropriate volume scaling.
