Voltage imbalance in the input DC voltage capacitors of multi-level Neutral-Point-Clamped Voltage-Source Inverter (NPC-VSI) is a well-known problem. The aim of this contribution is to suggest a solution to the instability of the DC capacitor voltages of the Five-Level NPC-VSI. The proposed configuration of the clamping bridge used requires eight switches and two capacitors to ensure the balancing of the DC-bus capacitors. This simple chopper is used in a two two-level PWM rectifier - five-level NPC VSI - permanent-magnet synchronous machine cascade. The strategy is validated through a simulation study.
