This paper presents a modeling approach to obtain a small-signal model and the digital implementation of a PI controller in the loop voltage and two controllers in the loop current based first on a standard fixed and sinusoidal band hysteresis control, followed by a variable band hysteresis control for a single-phase power factor corrector. All these controllers have been verified via simulation in Simulink using a continuous time plant model and a discrete time controller. Real-time implementation is performed on an experimental testbed using a rapid prototyping tool. All controllers are also experimentally compared for steady-state performance and transient response. It is shown that the PI-controller gives a better steady-state performance under large load disturbance and plant uncertainties, whereas the variable band hysteresis control in the loop current gives a low THD of the input current compared to a standard classical fixed and sinusoidal band hysteresis control.
