Following the climatic changes, there is a universal commitment to reduce green house gas emissions, especially those due to mobility. Of particular interest are hybrid propulsion systems which are currently considered as viable candidates to achieve a sustainable mobility. Within this commitment, the paper proposes an approach to improve the cost-effectiveness, the compactness and the reliability of the electric drive unit of hybrid propulsion systems. This could be attained thanks to the association of brushless DC motors (BLDCM) to a reduced structure DC/AC converter that is the four-switch inverter (FSI). The study considers two drives: the FSI-fed three-phase BLDCM and the FSI fed six-phase BLDCM. A special attention is focused upon the analysis of the sequences and commutations characterizing the operation of both BLDCM drives. A case study dealing with the control and simulation of the two drives is treated.
